Skin Issues? TCM Answers for Natural Beauty in Nanaimo
If you’re reading this in Nanaimo and thinking, “I’ve tried every skincare product, but my skin still doesn’t look or feel the way I want”—you’re not alone. Many people come to my practice frustrated with skin issues that don’t respond to topical treatments. Let’s explore what might be going on beneath the surface, and what you can do to support your skin from the inside out.
In this article, we’ll explore:
Why do skin issues happen?
This is a question I hear often in my Nanaimo practice. You might have tried different cleansers, moisturizers, or treatments, but the problem persists—or keeps coming back.
The short answer? Your skin is a reflection of what’s happening inside your body. In TCM, we see the skin as an external organ—connected to your lungs, digestion, and overall balance. When something’s off internally, it often shows up externally.
This is why topical treatments alone rarely solve chronic skin issues. They might temporarily improve the surface, but if the internal pattern remains, the problem returns.
What your skin is telling you about your health
People often search for “what causes skin problems.” In TCM, different patterns show up in different ways:
- Heat — Red, inflamed skin, acne that’s bright red and angry. Often related to stress, spicy foods, or excess heat in the body. (See our stress guide.)
- Dampness — Oily skin, cystic acne, puffiness, or skin that feels “sticky.” Often related to digestion and diet. (This connects to our digestion article and gentle cleansing guide.)
- Blood deficiency — Dry, dull, pale skin that ages prematurely. Often related to poor nutrition or heavy menstrual cycles.
- Stagnation — Uneven skin tone, dark circles, or skin that feels “stuck” in its healing. Often related to stress or lack of movement.
- Lung weakness — In TCM, the lungs govern the skin. Respiratory issues or grief can affect skin health.
5 signs your skin needs internal support
How do you know if your skin issues might be rooted internally? Here are five common signs people in Nanaimo notice:
- Topical treatments don’t work — You’ve tried different products with no lasting improvement.
- Breakouts coincide with stress or poor sleep — Your skin flares up when you’re run down.
- Skin issues come with digestive symptoms — Bloating, irregularity, or food sensitivities. (See our digestion guide.)
- Your skin changes with your cycle — Hormonal patterns showing up on your face.
- You have other internal symptoms — Fatigue, poor sleep, mood issues, or low energy. (Our energy article and sleep guide may help.)
How to support skin naturally: 3 daily habits
People often ask, “How to get glowing skin naturally?” The best approach isn’t another product—it’s supporting the internal systems that create healthy skin. Here are three habits you can start today:
1. Hydrate with warm water, not cold
Cold water shocks your digestive system. Warm water supports hydration and helps move stagnation.
You might try: Starting your day with a mug of warm water and lemon. Throughout the day, choose warm or room-temperature water over iced drinks. Your skin will thank you.
2. Eat for your skin type
Different skin issues respond to different foods:
- For hot, inflamed skin — Cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, mint, and leafy greens. Avoid spicy, greasy, or deep-fried foods.
- For oily, congested skin — Light, easy-to-digest foods like vegetables, soups, and small portions. Avoid dairy, sugar, and excess oil.
- For dry, dull skin — Nourishing foods like bone broth, healthy fats, cooked greens, and moderate amounts of animal protein.
3. Prioritize sleep for skin repair
Your skin does most of its repair while you sleep—especially between 11pm and 3am. If you’re regularly awake during these hours, your skin doesn’t get the regeneration time it needs.
You might try: Being in bed by 10:30pm with lights out by 11, even a few nights a week. Notice if your skin looks brighter after good sleep. (Our sleep guide has more on this.)
Is there an herbal remedy that helps?

Nuke Bazhen Wan – nourishes Qi and Blood for healthy complexion and vitality
This is a common question: “Is there an herbal remedy for skin and vitality?” In TCM, the answer depends on your pattern. However, there is a foundational principle: healthy, radiant skin requires sufficient Qi (energy) and Blood. Without them, the face can appear sallow, the spirit low, and the body feels depleted.
For women, this need is particularly pronounced due to the monthly menstrual cycle. Replenishing Qi and Blood, especially after menstruation, is a key part of maintaining long-term vitality and a fresh complexion. This is where classical formulas like Nuke Bazhen Wan (Eight Treasure Pills) come in. As its product description states, it is “originally used for women who are in deficiency of Qi and blood, sallow complexion… weakness in limbs” [1]. It’s a gentle, foundational tonic to support the body’s energy and blood production.
For those with more significant menstrual irregularities—such as severe pain, very heavy bleeding, or a feeling of cold and weakness in the lower back—a deeper-acting formula may be needed. Wuji Baifeng Wan (White Phoenix Pills) is traditionally used for such patterns. It not only nourishes Qi and Blood but also “regulates menstruation and stops vaginal bleeding,” addressing the root cause of the deficiency [2]. It’s designed for when the deficiency is accompanied by more complex gynecological symptoms.
It’s important to remember that Qi and Blood deficiency isn’t just a “woman’s issue.” Men can also experience sallow complexion, low energy, and a general lack of vitality when their foundational reserves are low. For them, a formula like Nuke Bazhen Wan can also be an appropriate choice to restore strength and a healthy appearance.
However, while these are classic and powerful formulas, they are not interchangeable. Nuke Bazhen Wan is a foundational Qi and Blood tonic, while Wuji Baifeng Wan is more specific to gynecological patterns with cold and pain. A third person might need a formula that clears Heat or resolves Dampness before they can even begin to tonify. This is why a personalized assessment matters—the right remedy depends entirely on your unique pattern.
When to see a professional for skin support
If you’ve tried these habits and your skin still isn’t responding—or if you’re dealing with persistent acne, eczema, rosacea, or other chronic skin conditions—it may be time to go deeper.
In my Nanaimo practice, we look at the whole picture: your skin symptoms, digestion, stress levels, sleep, and energy patterns. We also use tongue and pulse diagnosis to understand what’s happening beneath the surface—whether it’s Heat, Dampness, Blood deficiency, or a combination of patterns.
From there, we can put together a plan tailored to your body—whether that’s acupuncture, a customized herbal formula, dietary guidance, or adjustments to your daily routine. True beauty really does come from within.
