3 different types of liver fire cause depression. Because liver fire will make you bad sleep even insomnia all night. Long term insomnia is one of the causes of depression. Traditional Chinese Medical explains the depression is one of emotions. As a human being, we have seven spiritual activities (seven emotions): happiness, anger, worry, thought, sadness, fear, shock. They are a normal psychophysiological phenomenon and are affected by five internal organs – Lung, heart, spleen, liver and kidney. The physiological function of liver is affected by anger and sadness. You may have such an experience: when you were very angry, you felt aching on your left and right side of the ribs. People who have the liver fire will be depressed easier than people who knows how to release their unhappiness and pressure. The simply and fast way to help yourself out of depression is self check as the follow way then correct it.

In general, the liver fire is divided into three different types. According to the symptom appears from the body, the simple way is taking some certain food for a help. Self check your own symptoms then balance your nutrition intake before you ask for a help from a doctor, you may find your symptoms would disappear after your adjustment.

1. Liver fire caused by spleen deficiency – intake food which can benefit the spleen.

Symptoms: tired, fatigue, feel full in stomach and eat less than normal, two threatening pain, loose stool.

Final words:

Every one has a depression experience. It is not a shame. Some people are temporarily, slight and usually they can adjust by themselves in-taking food and doing exercises. I am one of this type of people. Some people are not, they are struggling, fighting with the depression, their doctors change pills for them again and again, their situations are more and more worse, most of them have to use alcohol or drug to release the pain. My hubby was one of those people. I have to learn Acupuncture and TCM to save him, he had been taking the pills for 20 years. I gave him treatment with Chinese herbal soup and acupuncture, he did not take his pills after a month, he had overnight sleep after the first acupuncture. And his anxiety is getting less and less day after day.

The above information is my knowledge and experience, may not be suitable for everyone and also can not be a treatment prescription. Please do not hesitate to see a TCM doctor if you have a serious depression problem.

Understanding the Liver-Depression Connection in TCM

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Liver has a special relationship with our emotions—particularly anger, frustration, and depression. When Liver Qi (energy) flows smoothly, our emotions flow smoothly. When it gets stuck or overheats, emotional difficulties often follow.

The 3 Liver Fire Patterns That Can Lead to Depression

1. Liver Qi Stagnation Transforming into Fire

Think of it like this: Imagine emotions as cars on a highway. When traffic flows smoothly (healthy Liver Qi), everything moves well. When there’s a traffic jam (Qi stagnation), frustration builds. If the jam lasts too long, tempers flare (transforms into Fire).

Emotional experience: Starts as feeling “stuck” or frustrated, then becomes irritable, angry outbursts, followed by guilt and depressive episodes.

Physical signs: Sighing frequently, chest/rib-side discomfort, feeling of lump in throat, menstrual irregularities.

2. Liver Fire Harassing the Heart

Think of it like this: The Liver (Wood element) normally nourishes the Heart (Fire element). But when Liver Fire is excessive, it’s like throwing too much wood on a fire—the Heart gets overwhelmed.

Emotional experience: Anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, racing thoughts combined with depressive moods.

Physical signs: Palpitations, bitter taste in mouth, red face, mouth ulcers, dream-disturbed sleep.

3. Liver Fire Damaging Yin

Think of it like this: Fire (Yang) needs Water (Yin) to balance it. Chronic Liver Fire is like a campfire burning all night—it eventually dries up the surrounding ground (damages Yin).

Emotional experience: Burnout, exhaustion, feeling “dried out” emotionally, lack of motivation, followed by depressive states.

Physical signs: Dry eyes, night sweats, hot flashes, afternoon low-grade fever, scanty menstruation.

When to Seek Professional Help

While these patterns help explain the TCM perspective, depression is a serious condition that requires professional support. Consider seeking help if:

  • Depressive feelings last more than 2 weeks
  • You experience thoughts of self-harm
  • Daily functioning is significantly impaired
  • Self-care strategies aren’t providing relief

In my Nanaimo practice, I often work collaboratively with mental health professionals, providing TCM support alongside conventional care.

Integrative Approach: TCM + Modern Understanding

Modern research is beginning to validate some TCM concepts:

  • Liver-Gut connection: TCM’s Liver-Spleen relationship parallels the gut-brain axis
  • Inflammation-depression link: Liver Fire’s inflammatory aspects align with neuroinflammation research
  • Circadian rhythms: The Liver’s 1-3 AM time slot relates to sleep architecture and mood regulation

This doesn’t mean TCM replaces conventional treatment, but it can be a valuable complementary approach.

Simple Daily Practices for Liver Health
